A few years ago while attending a national meeting, a friend and colleague from days at Premium Standard Farms chastised me about Biosecurity. Charlie Arnott was quickly becoming the "go to" on consumer preferences, paradigms, and concerns about theirmeat purchase decisions and how they perceived food animal industries. His impact has certainly been significant and he continues to guide us in many of our consumer decisions. His comment shook me a bit when he lamented that we use the term "biosecurity" and no one, neither producers nor consumers had a clue what it really meant and even more it sounded "scary" to consumers. I mumbled some indignant defense and sought the security and comfort of another swine veterinarian to talk to.
