Since 1995 a myriad of legislations, have been passed in Denmark, aimed at reducing antimicrobial consumption. In 1995 the veterinarians lost their right to sell Antibiotics. The idea was to take away any economic incentive. In the year 1998 and 2000,AGP's (Antibiotic Growth Promoters) where banned for weaners and Finishers. In the year 2000 the national Danish drug surveillance database, VetStat; was created. VetStat records all data from prescriptions veterinarians make to a farm and has access tothe national animal registry database. By knowing the amount of antimicrobials being used per animal on the farm, ADD's (Average Daily Doses) are calculated. And average daily dose is a standard dose of a drug per animal per day. In 2010 new legislations where passed in Denmark, where a maximum tolerated ADD use per animal group was set. Roughly every 2 years since then the maximum accepted consumption levels have been decreased. The challenge for Danish farms is keeping Productivity up with a low consumption of antimicrobials.
