Calculating and evaluating antibiotic usage in a United States swine production system

Information about antibiotic usage in production animal agriculture is on the top of mind for veterinarians, producers, consumers and most importantly retailers and food marketers. In 2015, a United States House Representative introduced the Delivering Antimicrobial Transparency in Animals Act of 2015 (H.R. 2459) to the House of Representatives, which if passed, would federally mandate tracking all antibiotics.1 Today, the demand for knowledge on antibiotic usage continues with the release of FDA's Guidance for the Industry 152, 209, and 213.2M Thus, the objective of this project was to quantify the antibiotic usage, based on Denmark's Danish Integrated Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring and Research Program (DANMAP) for a swine production system in the United States and to understand the opportunities and limitations it provides.
