Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) continues to be a threat to pig operations worldwide. Circulating PEDV genotype clusters today include Gla also known as CV777-like (Europe, Asia), Gib also known as INDEL (Asia, Europe, North America), G2a (Asia), and G2b also known as US prototype (North America, Asia) based on spike gene sequencing.1 While vaccines against PEDV have become available, little is known on cross-protection between genotypes and ideal vaccination routes. In January 2014 the firstconditionally licensed PEDV vaccine was introduced to the North American pig market. An RNA particle-based vaccine and an inactivated PEDV vaccine are also available to protect dams and their offspring against PEDV.2 While the use of these vaccines is often beneficial in previously exposed herds they often fail in naive herds.3 The objectives of this study were to determine the ability of an experimental Gib-based live vaccine administered orally or intramuscularly and compare it to a commercial G2b-based inactivated vaccine administered intramuscularly to protect growing pigs against G2b challenge.
