The most recent emerging disease in Canada, Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED), highlighted our lack of cohesive preparedness for dealing with current important endemic and future emerging diseases, in spite of much better containment than in the US Thispaper has three parts: A) a review of the past and why we have arrived at this point without seriously addressing emerging disease preparedness, B) our current position on PED and the recent changes in disease preparedness that have occurred to date, and C) a plan for a comprehensive and sustainable swine disease strategy for Canada.
