Novel POCT Device Safely Extracts Tuberculosis DNA from Clinical Samples

Background; There is a need for improved diagnostics for tuberculosis. Culture is the gold standard but still takes weeks; microscopy has a sensitivity of only 30-60%. Current MTB 'POCTs' are not only too costly for developing communities but also rely on a 'mains' electrical supply, which is a drawback. A prototype battery operated POCT device using label-free isothermal solid-phase amplification and detection (ISAD)(1) was re-designed to detect MTB (2). A sample processor was designed with Dimethyl adipimidate/Thin film Sample processing (DTS ) (3), initially as a stand alone module.
