Residential indoor PM_10 and PM_(2.5) in Beijing

PM_(2.5) and PM_10 samples were collected from November 2012 to February 2013 in the indoor environments of six residences and their adjacent outdoor environments in Beijing, China during the winter. It was found that the mean indoor PM_(2.5) and PM_10 concentrations were 135.06 and 192.46 mug/m~3, respectively. The corresponding mean outdoor levels were 154.86 and 236.2 mug/m~3 for PM2.5 and PM_10, respectively. The indoor particulate levels were found to be about 3-5 times higher than those in residences in Europe and North America, where most residences are located in suburb areas with a much better ambient air quality. A good correlation was observed between the indoor and outdoor particulate levels. This was probably due to the fact that the indoor fine PM was derived mainly from the outdoor environment of Beijing's residences.
