The gravity heat pipe is a reliable and efficient heat transport device and has been widely used in many places. By now, there have four methods to improve the gravity heat pipe performance, high efficiency working medium, internal surface treatment, inside plug-in and other categories. In the paper, an experimental investigation of the operating characteristics of the gravity heat pipe with cross internal helical microfin gravity filled with water was presented and compared with general heat pipe from horizontal and vertical position. The experimental results showed that in the horizontal position, GHPCIHM has lower evaporation section temperature and axial temperature difference, and the drying limit is 1.5 times higher than general GHP. In the vertical position, mass nucleation site, characteristic surface tension and special helical angel make GHPCIHM lower thermal resistance and higher heat transfer performance than general GHP.
