Joining Porous Coating of Spongy Titanium Powder with a Basis of Compact Titanium by Pressing in the Manufacture of Surgical Implants Parts
Porous parts and coatings on compact substrates (into which the bone tissue grows) are used in the design of surgical implants, providing stable fixation of the implants and their long-term performance within the body. Very important is the strength of adhesion of the porous coating to the compact substrate supporting the load. The influence of surface preparation method of compact titanium substrate on the adhesive strength of the porous coating of spongy titanium powder, obtained via powder pressing onto substrate and sintering in a vacuum, was studied. The method of coating manufacture was developed that ensures adhesion to the substrate above the actual strength of the porous coating. This is ensured by riffling of the substrate surface, width and depth of the riffles commensurable with the size of the titanium powder particles, with the help of which porous coating is obtained, and by abrasive jet-blasting of the substrate before pressing titanium powder onto it. Examples of titanium substrates samples with different surface preparation and the study results of adhesion to them of porous coatings of spongy titanium powder are given.
