Nowadays more and more studies of silk used as biomaterialsare reported in literatures such as silk-based vascular grafts. It is reported that sericin, part of silk,is the major cause of adverse responses. In this study, firstly the silk yarn was degummed in sodium carbonate solution to find the proper degumming technology. Then the silk/polyester tubular fabrics including three kinds of weaves (plain,2/2 twill and 1/3 twill) were degummed in sodium carbonate solution and the residual sericin was examined with picrocarmine solution and the loss rate. But sericin in the fabric was more difficult to be removed completely than in the yarn without any additional treatment. With the help of additional physical treatment, the degumming will be more efficient. The ultrasonic vibration and mechanical washing as additional treatment have been used in this research. The results showed that the silk/PET tubular fabric could be degummed completely under the condition of 0.5 g/L Na2CO3 solution at 80°C for 90 min with mechanical washing despite of the different weaves, while the silk fiber could be degummed successfully under the condition of 0.5 g/L Na2CO3 solution at 80°C for 20 min. Therefore the silk fibroin/PET prototype vascular grafts could be obtained through this method which can provide basis for development of the silk fibroin/PET prototype vascular graft further.
