In today's construction industry, the engineering software has been playing a rising important role, or even has become the pillar, in the project delivery. Apart from using engineering software from commercial vendors, architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) companies may develop their own engineering software, with the aim to satisfy the diverse project requirements and increase their competitiveness in the fierce market. Despite its potential benefits, the self-developed engineering software is in accompany with many risks, which should also be recognized by AEC companies. This study aims to provide a clear understanding of the benefits and risks of self-developed engineering software. For doing this, an extensive survey on eighteen professionals from AEC companies has been done. Major benefits and risks were identified according to the level of importance marked by the professionals. Findings of this study could help AEC companies to reach a more rational decision in attaining the engineering software for their projects.
