Aerospace Pressurized Vessels and Components: Considerations for AIAA Standard Development

This paper presents the current activities of the AIAA Aerospace Pressure Vessel (APV) Committee on Standards (CoS). In March, 2018, the AIAA APV CoS published ANSI/AIAA S-080A-2018 (Revision of AIAA S-080-1998) Space Systems-Metallic Pressure Vessels, Pressurized Structures, and Pressure Components and ANSI/AIAA S-081B-2018 (Revision of AIAA S-081A-2006) Space Systems-Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels. Currently, the committee is active in several areas. The CoS is pursuing two new standards. A joint subcommittee was formed with the AIAA Structures Committee. This subcommittee is developing a new standard for composite pressurized structures. This may become a standalone standard or may be combined with the existing standards ANSI/AIAA S-110-2005 Space Systems Structures, Structural Components, and Structural Assemblies. The CoS is working towards a new standard for composite lined (and possibly also linerless) pressure vessels. As a first step, the APV CoS is planning to publish a Guide in this area. The CoS is also tracking the industry developments in areas of Additive Manufacturing and Heat Pipes and Bellows. As the technology matures and the industry dictates, the CoS will be able to release relevant standards in those areas. This paper also provides technical data and discusses engineering analyses to address technical challenges facing the CoS.
