The AERMOD model sponsored by the US EPA incorporates advanced theories of atmospheric turbulence, boundary layer structure, and dispersion, and is currently in widespread use in many jurisdictions in the US, Canada and Internationally. The detailed treatment of the physics and meteorology requires many execution steps, each of which requires significant execution time. When coupled with the need to model years of hourly meteorological data this creates a substantial CPU execution burden when a large number of sources and receptors is modeled. If the model needs to be executed a large number of times to treat multiple pollutants or source scenarios the CPU execution times run into hundreds of hours. Most of this time is spent in repeating identical core calculations. The structure of the model code, which was written to produce the result tabulations and reports in computer memory concurrently with the calculations, creates a limited repertory of fixed reports and also leads to the need for rerunning the model for multiple scenarios. The only solution to the repetitive calculations and reporting constraints is to decouple the calculation procedure from the reporting and analysis tasks.
