We select the energy source of the unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) depending on its purposes, considering its cost, safety, maintenance, energy density and so on. Especially for underwater exploration and military purpose, the UUV should operate underwater for a longer period of time. Thus, it is desirable to select the energy source with a high energy density considering limited installation volume and weight. The lithium battery is most widely used for the energy source of the UUV. However, as its operation is limited to the several tens of hours, many researchers have been studying on the fuel cell as a high energy density sources for UUV. In this study, assuming the volume and required power for the UUV, we calculate the volume and weight of the energy system and its related system for the target operation period to see if the AIP(Air Independent Propulsion) system can be installed in the UUV. We developed the 150W and 1kW the closed type fuel cell systems and performed several tests to check their applicability for UUV.
