This study aimed to investigate the effects of applying pre-modified talc with cationic starches of different degree of substitution (DS) of 0.02, 0.03, and 0.04 and at filler loading of 20%, substituting 10%, 20% and 30% of calcium carbonate with the pre-modified talc with the variables of starch substituting for pre-modified talc and proportions of talc to calcium carbonate on the wet-end properties (first-pass fiber retention, and filler retention) and handsheet physical properties (tensile index, tear index, bulk), and optical properties (brightness and opacity). The results indicated that adding different DS pre-modified talc lead to first-pass retention, ash content, tensile and tear strengths all become higher than the control. There were significant decrease of paper bulk, brightness and opacity, however. The 0.03 DS pre-modified talc showed optimal performances, with higher first-pass retention, ash content and tensile strength.
