Preface: 3rd International Conference on the Science and Engineering of Materials (ICoSEM 2017)

On 24 and 25 October 2017 the third conference in the ICoSEM series was held in Armada Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This conference was jointly organised by the Centre of Advanced Materials (CAM) and the Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Material Processing (AMMP), both located in the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This conference provided a platform for researchers, students and industry specialists to discuss the advances in the science and engineering of materials. There were 2 plenary lectures and 53 oral presentations for an audience of 60 participants from all over the world. Based on these presentations, 36 papers are published in these proceedings. The topics covered the wide range of synthesis and preparation, materials modelling, design, properties and characterisation. Considering the important influence of manufacturing processes on the development of microstructure and properties of materials, this edition was also opened up for presentations discussion manufacturing. On behalf of the organising committee, we would like to thank the advisory board, the plenary speakers and the participants who made this conference a success. We would also like to congratulate the organising committee for the smooth organisation and the pleasant experience for all.
