A new concept for improving the absorption efficiency of nitric acid plants has been developed. This concept uses pure oxygen for the oxidation of nitrous acid (HNO2) and nitrous gases mainly in the liquid phase. Ten industrial test runs were carried out at five different nitric acid plants and led to the conclusion that the choice of appropriate introduction point, the correct amount and the method of introducing the oxygen is decisive for a successful application.
