The demands on the hot stamping process, especially in the automotive sector, are steadily increasing. The constant change of complex lightweight constructions of sheet material puts high demands on the materials themselves and the production processes. Components with tailored properties are an elegant solution and state of the art. A customized selection of tool steels, depending on the hot stamping processes and the required mechanical and physical properties of the material, is therefore an essential part of optimizing the final component. Varieties of conventional, electro slag remelted and powder metallurgical steel grades are used to manufacture tools, which can realize the challenging standards, set by the automotive industry. This paper deals with the appropriate selection of modern high performance tool steels and high speed steels for the production of tailored property parts.
