Much has been written regarding the role of the human being in causing safety events across the globe and within the oil and gas industry. It can certainly be argued that historically the emphasis has been on investigating the root causes / causal factors of safety events that have occurred as opposed to expending energy and effort up front to prevent the safety event from occurring. This paper will: 1. look at the way that the human being can be our most valuable safety asset by preventing the safety events from occurring; 2. consider approaches adopted across the oil and gas industry; 3. present a case study that demonstrates how, with the correct development of tools and processes the safety culture can be enhanced and deliver measurable and proven results in safety performance; 4. offer some lessons learned over a 3-year period focussing on the human being in a proactive manner to build safety performance in direct contrast to the historic focus on the human being as a reason for the safety event occurring.
