Owing to new development in distributed networks, deregulation, congestion, etc. in the system; Modern electrical power system has become very complicated. Also working voltage levels and power levels of the system have increased and its operation has become more tedious. For proper operation and control of such complicated power system, newer devices for protection and control have to be introduced. For protection of interconnected power grid, modern relays have to be kept at appropriate locations. Owing to many features of modern relays including directional function, makes the coordination of relays much more complicated and thus the fundamental objective in this work is on proper relay coordination. According to network topology, a new method is proposed in this paper and tested for ring networks. The algorithm is implemented as a simplified program developed in MATLAB which determines the Relative Sequence Matrix for the ring networks. Detailed explanation with case studies and results has been presented.
