THE PERFECT ROLE OF AE94.2 IN SOUTH ASIA PEAK PLANTS

The steadily developing economy in South East Asia, where the main energy resource is still based on carbon and conventional cycles, demands nowadays reliable peak plants, capable to quickly cover the peak demand of a growing Country. Today the required service factor for those plants is around 20%, i.e. the plant is called for operation 5 hours per day. And this operation must be reliable, safe and totally compliant with local grid codes and environmental laws. In this frame, the two AE94.2 gas turbines awarded by Ansaldo Energia in the new 2+1 combined cycle of Grati CCPP in Pasuruan, East Java – Indonesia, show their perfect role in adapting to a this dynamic market, fulling all constrains. A combined cycle wit bypass stack acting at the same time as a peak plant is made possible by the intrinsic characteristics of the AE94.2 since its high loading ramp combined with a medium value in exhaust gas temperature allows fast steam production at reduced impact on boiler stress. Moreover the AE94.2 can be easily adapted to burn different fuels (oil and variable mixtures of gases) thus offering a valid fuel diversification and protection against natural gas shortage, allowing early power with a secondary fuel in case of need. This presentation will highlight the main features of a gas turbine that, in terms of overall flexibility, substantial operating experience and robust architecture, seems to be the proper response to the challenging energy mix, in terms of potential fuels and peak demand, of the future in this Region.
