Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder which results in a large number of health problems and fatal diseases. Existing sleep apnea detection systems require the users to wear several sensors during sleep which is uncomfortable and interruptive to user's sleep. In this paper, we propose ApneaRadar, a contactless sleep monitoring system to detect sleep apnea in real time using a commercial off-the-shelf 24GHz radar. The proposed ApneaRadar system is able to capture the movement of the user's chest therefore to achieve the breathing pattern during sleep. We also proposed an algorithm to detect the sleep apnea based on the breathing pattern in real time. We implemented the ApneaRadar system and conducted a series of more than 100-hour experiment in volunteers who wear the Polysomnography (PSG) meanwhile as the ground truth. The experimental results show that our proposed system achieves over 90% accuracy in apnea detection compared with PSG.
