The respiratory rhythm is originated in the respiratory center of the brain, in the pons and medulla to be exact. The respiratory center will generate the pattern and coordinate various involuntary influences on the respiratory system. Breathing is stimulated by increases in carbon dioxide concentration or decreases in oxygen concentration in the arterial blood. Respiration includes two processes; the absorption of oxygen and removal of carbon dioxide, which is external respiration and utilization of oxygen and the production of carbon dioxide by the cells, which is internal respiration.
