PROJECT MANAGEMENT FOR MINING - A PROJECT SUCCESS PRIMER

Opening a major new mine is a complex undertaking, entailing billions of dollars over many years. Missteps cannot be tolerated in today's social media world where wealth creation is more often confronted than embraced. A compilation of best practices for mining projects has been captured in the SME Project Management for Mining handbook. Successful project execution requires clear goal cognizance by the participants, and a knowledge of the tactics best likely to achieve that goal. Strategies captured within the SME book draw upon the collective wisdom of experienced project managers from a broad spectrum of global mineral undertakings; the majority successful, a few not. The SME book and its derivative course are the catalyst for this paper. Beginning with the need for mining ethics and governance, the paper walks through the key project steps - scope definition, feasibility, permitting, societal acceptance, project execution plan, minimizing risk, pitfalls to avoid, creating realistic schedules and budgets, assembling resources, establishing controls - into delivery of engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and operations ramp-up.
