A Novel Processing Route for Producing Magnesium Based Metal Matrix Composites

Magnesium based metal matrix composites (Magnesium MMC's) are combining the lightweight potential of magnesium with the special properties of reinforcing particles. In this paper a novel continuous extrusion processing route for magnesium based metal matrix composites is presented. In the present process, the single materials are mixed in the form of chips or powder and subsequently transferred into the semi-solid state. Afterwards, the material is extruded trough a die, where bars with several meters of length can be formed. For investigating the potential of the process and the produced products, magnesium with different amounts of silicon-carbide in the size of 1-10 μm is processed together and the resulting microstructure as well as the mechanical properties were analysed. It is shown that the new process is capable of producing particle reinforced magnesium alloys where the particles are distributed homogenously and a proper bonding between particles and matrix is ensured.
