Here I use the following definition on preventive maintenance (PM): "All activities done to prevent failures from occurring and to find a failure before it develops to a breakdown". Activities include: lubrication, cleaning, operating practices, fixed time maintenance, balancing, alignment, filtration, basic inspections and predictive technologies". To correct a failure found during inspection enables the corrective action to be planned and scheduled. This work is here not part of PM, it falls in the category of corrective maintenance. (CM) In the greatest maintenance organizations about 10% of all maintenance hours are PM. 70% are CM and the rest is continuous improvement as part of root cause problem elimination (RCPE) work.
