In this study, Mott MacDonald describes the use of Energy Storage System (ESS) with battery storage for utility-scale renewable power plants in order to control the change in power output from renewable energy power plants (i.e. Ramp Rate Control). The ESS is designed for a rapid response in order to minimise the rate of change in the power generation from solar PV and wind power plants. The concept of this ESS is to either charge or discharge batteries using a portion of energy from the power plant when the rate of change in power output from the power plant is detected to exceed the transmission grid utility’s requirement.
