Template4EHR: Building Dynamically GUIs for the Electronic Health Records Using Archetypes

The creation of Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) for the Electronic Health Record (EHR) based on archetypes improves maintainability of Health applications and reduces dependence on a software team. However, we noticed there lacked approaches to build customizable GUIs for the EHR, and performed experimental tests to assess the usability of Health applications created from archetypes. This paper presents a customizable GUI-building tool for EHR using archetypes. In order to achieve that, we specify an algorithm that extracts the data attributes, terminologies and constraints of archetypes, and another to generate a GUI using the extracted elements as input. In addition, we carried out experimental tests with computer and health professionals to evaluate the generated GUIs, and compared the results with a tool available in the market. The GUI created by our proposed tool achieved an 81.22% satisfaction rate of the professionals who took part in this study.
