A COMPLETE RE-EXAMINATION OF THE BOG BODIES OF THE ARCHAOLOGISCHES LANDESMUSEUM, SCHLOSS GOTTORF, SCHLESWIG, GERMANY
This paper discusses the recent re-examination of the Iron Age bog bodies at the Archaeologisches Landesmuseum, Schloss Gottorf in Schleswig, Northern Germany. The re-assessment of the six bog bodies (acidic peat) and one bog skeleton (alkaline peat) consisted of a thorough search of the literature and the archives for information about the discoveries, excavations and previous analyses; a complete physical re-examination; medical imaging in the form of digital X-rays and Multi-slice Computed Tomography (MSCT); hair analyses; and DNA sampling to provide a complete picture of all of the bodies. Although the final results for all of the analyses are not yet available, the identification of methods appropriate to the examination of human remains from peat is, in itself, a substantial contribution to the research area.
