QUALITY AND QUANTITY OF RUNOFF FROM AFFORESTED CUT-AWAY PEATLANDS

The amount of production areas which are exhausted of usable peat resources is increasing rapidly. Afforestation of these areas is one of the after-use alternatives most preferred by the land owners. However, the preparation of these sites is always associated with some kind of environmental impact. The aim of this work is to study the water quality and the leaching of nutrients from afforested areas. Some of the plots in the experimental areas were mounded and fertilized, and some were left as an untreated control area. After site preparation the nutrient content of runoff water is usually relatively high compared to that from normal peat production areas or peatland forest areas. However, the concentrations seem to return to the normal level very rapidly.
