As livestock producers who care for our animals, it is essential that our animal welfare practices are of the highest standard. Ending the life of a non-viable animal is unpleasant and difficult, but as producers we accept this as our humane responsibility. In 2009, the leadership of Value-Added Science and Technologies (VAST) realized that blunt force trauma for the euthanasia of suckling pigs was coming under pressure as an acceptable method. Although we believe blunt force trauma, done properly, is a humane method of euthanasia, it has become clear that it is not an acceptable practice in the eyes of the consumer. Moreover, administering blunt force trauma is difficult - physically and emotionally - for farm workers.
