Today, formed metal parts are mostly produced by press lines or by hot stamping lines. For that purpose pre-cut sheet metal parts, or "blanks", are supplied; its partly complicated geometry is determined in simulations and is optimized during a tryout phase. Especially in the automotive industry, blanks are required to economically produce formed car body components. In particular the demanding skin parts often cannot be made out of easy rectangle or trapezoid blanks due to their complicated geometry. To avoid cracks or the formation of wrinkles, more complicated developed blanks are required which, up to now, can only be produced economically in blanking lines with a press and cutting dies.
