A Novel Sample System for Collecting Semi-Volatile Organic Compounds (SVOC) from Modern Light-Duty Vehicles

With light-duty gasoline vehicles, the collection of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOC) is difficult. Modern aftertreatment technologies for light-duty gasoline vehicles have significantly reduced the concentrations of SVOC in exhaust. One challenge for sampling the exhaust from light-duty gasoline vehicles is the high percentage of volatile-phase SVOC compounds. These compounds are more difficult to collect because the concentrations are low and the exhaust temperatures are high enough to reduce the amount of material which collects on the sample media. A novel sampling system was designed to sample the entire exhaust generated by a gasoline vehicle during the Federal Test Procedure (FTP). This system was capable of collecting the entire exhaust from the vehicle while improving sample detection limits. This novel sampling system also allowed the quantification of SVOC trapped as particulate on the filters and semi-volatile phase SVOC collected by XAD in the traps, independently.
