Biomass to Energy - Pollution Control Lessons Learned in Europe

With the USEPA's December 2012 issuance of the Boiler MACT many Mills are facing difficult decisions. The MACT limits for new and existing sources represent a distinct challenge for the pollution control devices that have been historically utilized on solid fuel fired boilers. While these limits are more stringent than that to which we have become accustom in the USA, they would on numerous points be considered "Business as Usual" in the European Union. Based on techniques and technology proven in Europe, this presentation will review the following: 1. Emission limit values in Europe for biomass incineration plants 2. How to achieve low stack limits for PM acid gases, HM incl. Hg and dioxins/furans 3. Techniques to maximize additive utilization 4. What is considered "State of the Art" for biomass-to-energy or boiler pollution control in Europe considering the EU regulations are becoming even more stringent
