The Soil Treated Dam (STD)a New Concept of Cemented Dam

soils,e.g.clay containing materials,treated with lime and / or cement are commonly used in the construction of transport infrastructure (roads,railways,airports,etc.).Some applications also exist in hydraulic structures,particularly in the USA,Australia,South Africa and Europe.This presentation deals with a new concept of dam using that type of material,the Soil Treated Dam (STD).It starts with a description of the techniquefollowed by a presentation of the difference with hardfill/CSG,in terms of characteristics ofmaterials as well as of the binders used and the level of mechanical performance.Then,a newconcept of cemented dam is developed.The typical STD has a height lower than50 m,its profile is symmetrical and it is sealed by an upstream facing.STD may be an economical solution on many embankment dam sites.The paper finally how treated soils can fill a gap by giving the possibility to enhance the mechanical performanceof clayey materials and to reduce the duration of earthworks and construction cost.
