There is currently much literature on the subject of interface shear testing on geomembrane/geotextile interfaces; however, there is a dearth of information on the effect of varying the shear rate of the test on the shear strength parameters obtained. There are currently several different testing standards in use, each of which specifies the use of a different shear rate. The choice of shear rate governs the duration of the test and hence is directly proportional to the cost of each test. This paper investigates the impact varying the shear rate on the shear strength parameters obtained for direct shear tests and finds no correlation between shearing rates and shear strength.
