NFPA 502 and NFPA 130 are the main fire and life safety standards for transit and road tunnels in the US and are widely referred in other countries. However, currently there is no document in the US that sets requirements for non-emergency ventilation in tunnels. ASHRAE Standard Project Committee (SPC) 217 represented by tunnel owners, operators, consultants and equipment vendors is developing the standard for non-emergency tunnel ventilation. Another document named as "Recommended AASHTO Guidelines for Emergency Ventilation Smoke Control in Roadway Tunnels" is being developed by the authors for the US National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP). The Guidelines will serve as technical guidelines on tunnel ventilation and fire life safety for AASHTO state officials. The two documents being developed are completely independent and will not be combined for a unified standard.
