It is well known that a portable air cleaner is effective for removal of indoor air pollutants, especially suspended biological particulate matter (bioaerosols). However, regarding the valuation method for the purification performance of an air cleaner, a formal method, such as an international standard, has yet to be established. Currently, the equivalent air change rate and clean air delivery rate (Miller et al., 2002) are advocated as indices of the purification performance of an air cleaner; the former is based on the bioaerosol concentration decay method, which uses a test chamber, and the latter is concerned with the performance of the air cleaner itself. On the other hand, regarding the purification performance of an air cleaner, there is also a valuation method called the single pass method. This study aimed to compare the decay method and single pass method under the same conditions and to clarify the relationship between the two methods.
