Measurement of chlorinated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons associated with PM2.5 in Japan

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous hazardous compounds because of their mutagenic and carcinogenic properties (Bostron, C. E. et al., 2002). In general, particle-bond PAHs are present in the fine fraction of atmospheric particles. Chlorinated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (ClPAHs) are one of the category of PAH derivatives, which have been reported to show mutagenic and carcinogenic properties (Ohura et al., 2007). Ohura and co-workers conducted monitoring studies of atmospheric particle-bound ClPAHs in Japan over the last 10 years (Ohura et al., 2005, Kakimoto et al., 2014), but they did not focus on the fine fraction. In this study, we investigated atmospheric levels and relationships of ClPAHs and corresponding parent PAHs associated with PM2.5 (particles smaller than 2.5 μm), Japan.
