Delay tolerant networks (DTNs) become the key technology to achieve ubiquitous network service. It has many characteristics such as a high delay, low data rate, intermittent connectivity, long queuing time, the dynamic network topology, and resource constrained. How to effectively and reliably transmit data under extreme environments is core research and hot issue for DTNs. However, high efficient routing algorithm is the key technology to solve this problem. Current routing protocols for DTNs can be divided into multiple copy routing and single copy routing, in which multiple copy routing mainly includes replication-based routing, code-based routing, and social-based routing. This paper based on the analysis and summary of code-based and social-based routing protocols in delay tolerant network routing protocols further points out how to balance the conflicts between increasing message transmission rate, reducing average delay and improving resource utilization, reducing routing overhead. At the same time, it can achieve the better routing performance and higher resource utilization, which is the difficulty to research delay tolerant networks routing algorithm.
