An optimally designed produced water treatment process is found by properly selecting the removal processes for the specific target contaminants while simultaneously engineering the economics of the process to meet the demand for the intended market. The treatment of produced water has been occurring for decades using conventional technologies and standard engineering design practices. Recently a host of new technologies have been introduced to increase the efficiency and improve the quality economics of produced water management. The primary treatment processes implemented to treat produce water include: agglomeration, gravity separation, flotation, adsorption, absorption, filtration, Ion Exchange and distillation. Each of these treatment mechanisms works best on a specific contaminant and influent type. Additionally each treatment mechanism has limits to the effluent quality it can produce, waste stream generation and the cost of treatment. This paper evaluates technologies available for the treatment of produced water and discusses the costs, benefits and appropriate applications for each.
