Typical implementations of the full matrix capture technique (FMC) of ultrasonic inspection are slow and computationally expensive. As such, the technique has gained the reputation of being a "science experiment" or "lab curiosity". Three factors which lead to this slowness are limited data throughput, limited processing power, and fundamental (ultrasonic) limitations of data collection. Moreover, typical implementations of matrix capture inspections lead to results that are not directly comparable with those produced by monolithic or phased-array inspections.
