The Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) came into force for new build ships in January 2013 in order to improve the efficiency of ships at the design stage. In June 2013 the European Commission made a proposal to monitor and report CO2 emissions for all ships calling at EU ports in 2018, possibly a first step to a market based measure to reduce CO2 emissions. With no clear way to regulate operational CO_2 emissions available in the short-term, building new ships under the EEDI, which utilises a single design point, could have implications on both the profitability and CO_2 emissions of ships in operation. This paper investigates the potential implications of designing for EEDI and designing for profit maximisation, both considered as incentives to reduce CO_2 emissions.
