Fully functionalized photorefractive polymers have attracted much attention in recent years. While the synthesis of chromophore-containing functionalized monomers is not a trivial task, and the polymerization of functionalized monomer normally gives a low molecular weight owing to both the monomer bulkiness and the side effect of functional group on polymerization, which is not beneficial to the film-forming property. Recent development on ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of cyclic olefinic derivatives provides an excellent approach, especially the ROMP of norbornene functional monomers. With the aim of fully functionalized photorefractive polymers bearing a non-conjugated main chain (NCMC), the carbazole-based functionalized monomers were designed and synthesized by introduction of the norbornene groups. In this paper, two norbornene monomers with methine chromophore were designed and synthesized via Vilsmeyer and Knoevenagel reactions. Corresponding polymers were prepared via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) using Grubbs 2 as a catalyst (Scheme 1). Corresponding polymers were prepared via ROMP using Grubbs 2 catalyst and were characterized by IR, UV-Vis, GPC, DSC and TG, etc. Their number average molecular weights (Mn) are higher than 5.0 × 10~4 and their glass transition temperatures are in the range from 18°C to 101°C.
