This paper portrays the development history of dual mass flywheels after a period of 3 decades. What were the boundary conditions and stimuli for this development, which can now be found in approximately half of all vehicles with manual gearshift transmissions produced today? It is important to learn from history. Parallels are therefore drawn again and again with current developments. It is significant that history repeats itself. The obstacles and disappointments but also the successes can also be found in a similar form in the case of current developments. If a development is successful, it turns out to have many fathers, while an unsuccessful development is something that everyone predicted right from the start.
