High tenacity polyester development followed the advances in high tenacity nylon, and this product has been used since the 1950's as the basic raw material for plastics and rubber reinforcement (i.e. tire cord), as well as rope-manufacturing yarn. In the early development of High Tenacity Polyester Yarn, the production was made in two steps: Spinning & Drawing, the latter step being more important in order to reach the desired mechanical (stress-strain) and shrinkage properties of the yarn. On the polymer side, increase of the average molecular weight (measured as Intrinsic Viscosity) was accomplished with Solid State Poly-condensation (SSP), starting from textile grade PET chips.
