In this study, ion exchange membrane from recycled expanded polystyrene (EPS) for heavy metal removal from industrial wastewater has been developed. Polymer nanofiber ion exchanger (PNIE) membranes are made by electrospinning from solutions of dissolved recycled expanded polystyrene (EPS) prior to sulfonation processes. The diameter of the fiber in the fabrics ranged from 1063nm to 2261nm.Nanofibers was sulfonated and cross linked at the same time by sulfuric acid as the sulfonating agent and silver sulfate act as an initiator. These fabrics were carefully characterized by a sequence of techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), titration and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The existence of sulfonic groups in the sulfonated electrospun polystyrene membranes was confirmed by FT-IR. The concentration of copper in the test solution was determined by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer(AA) before and after being filtered out by polymer nanofiber ion exchangers(PNIE). The ion exchange capacity of the virgin sulfonated PNIE is in the range of 0.4-0.8 mmol/g and the ion exchange capacity of the recycled expanded polystyrene is in the range of 0.6-1 mmol/g.
