A combination of ground based measurements on a local-scale, continuous tall tower measurements on a regional-scale providing a large temporal resolution, and finally airborne measurements covering large spatial scales can be used to constrain and reduce the uncertainties in the GHG emission inventory of CH_4 and N_2O in California. Measurement techniques like PMF, eddy covariance and inverse dispersion is being used to generate these estimates. Initial results point toward the dominance and potential under-estimation of the livestock and dairy sources of CH4 in the Central Valley while previously minor sources like oil and gas production (Peischl et ah, submitted 2013) may be larger sources than previously estimated and need to be studied more extensively.
