I don't know if you are a basketball fan, but there is a new phenomenon in the NBA, the Golden State Warriors. They play basketball more beautifully and successfully than perhaps any team ever has. Their offense is extremely fluid, making passes, passing up good shots, then making a few more passes to get an even better shot. The reason they can pass so quickly, so many times, to so many players is that all the players are very proficient at passing. Not only is it a joyful experience to watch them, but it is obvious the team also delights in playing this way. What isn't so obvious is that their ability to play a beautiful game is based on a consistent application of the fundamentals - dribbling, passing, screening, positioning, and, of course, defense. What isn't so obvious, are all the boring hours they spend to develop and maintain these basic skills. Even in the NBA, surprisingly, most players are not proficient at all the basics. Some are shooters, some passers, some rebounders etc. But the Warriors are different; their knowledge and application of the fundamentals comes from painstaking learning and practice. The mastery of the fundamentals allows them to play a brutally competitive style and have a great deal of fun doing it.
