Development of New Industrial Standard for Measurement of Noise Emitted by very small air-moving devices

Since the publication of INCE Recommended Practice, TG-CBE 1-85 1985[1], the plenum box, so called, Maling box, with physical dimension of 1.2 m(W) by 1.2 m(D) x 1.0 m(H), has been used for airborne noise measurement of small air-moving devices. This recommended practice became technical basis of ANSI S12.11:1987[2] and ISO 10302:1996[3]. At the publication of ISO 10302, reduced-size plenum up to its half dimension was accepted. However, comparing with the physical size of recent air-moving devices, especially with low acoustic noise emission and low volume flow rate, the plenum size is becoming still large for actual engineering applications. Therefore, it is urgently needed to define much smaller plenum size and update related measurement methodologies. This paper presents the recent investigation results of airborne noise measurements on such a small air-moving device with a quarter-sized plenum. These results will be documented within 2003, as JBMS-72[4] (Industrial Standard by JBMIA: Japan Business Machine and Information System Industries Association).
